“There are all those things that don’t show up on their financial aid figures, because they have a lot of resources for financial aid,” Guerra added.

Darden Academy, for instance, gives students thousands of dollars in scholarships for student-athletes, Guerra noted.

Many other universities that have a big endowment also offer financial aid to students, but not everything. For instance, the University of Arizona’s athletic department can claim just $100,000 in need-based programs for its students.

Most schools that are part of the Association for the Advancement of Teaching, including Darden, offer student scholarships that often amount to many thousands of dollars each year.

“No school in America has the resources to provide this kind of money when it comes to financial aid,” said Guerra. “We need schools to stop asking students to pay.”

In the US, more students attend and complete high school than ever before. More than one-third of college students enter high school with some kind of financial aid, according to the National Association of Scholars.

According to the United States Department of Education, more than 1.4 million students are now in need of financial aid, a record number. With a new government tax-credit for college students, many are able to attend college and become taxpayers, Guerra said.
